Queen of the Pijas

Our Spanish friend D, from Valencia, was in town the past few days. He let us stay in his family's weekend house and also in his flat in Valencia last August. That's when he first told me that I am a pija. I don't know how to spell this word, so I could use some help from you Spanish speakers out there. But it is pronounced something like "pee-kha."

Here is what I know about pijas: a pija is prissy. A pija has sort of exaggerated and dramatic reactions. Boy pijas exist, but pijas are primarily female. Pijas are very polite, but I inferred that it is a sort of artificial politeness. And I think they are extremely girly and like to go shopping. D also mentioned the quality of my voice: it is high and quite sing-songy at times. I wasn't happy about being a pija in August, and I'm not happy about it now, though D insists that it's not a bad thing.

Last night, D declared me "Queen of the Pihas." I laughed at the time, and I still think it's funny. But I am also ferociously hormonal right now, and it hurt my feelings a little bit. I guess that I just want to be Audra, and not a pija. Zsolti, as always, is so sweet to me, and he looks at me a bit sadly, and says, "Well, I like pijas."

I am too sensitive. But I am in the midst of an Ugly Shoes episode, and I just can't help it. Ugly Shoes is a term that The Economist and I developed in undergrad. It works like this: when you've got PMS, one small thing snowballs so that the whole world sucks, so that even when you look down at your feet, you think, "...and I have ugly shoes!" It is completely irrational and not at all how I want to be, but there it is: a feeling in my chest, anxiety in my belly, a lump in my throat, a torrent of tears, and nothing can alleviate it but time.

Take off your shoes and walk barefoot. No one will call you a Pija anymore. They'll be too busy stealing glances of your bare feet.

consider the healing power of a kinder egg! i _know_ they have them over there...KERJUK, olvassa el figyelmesen es tartsa be: A jatek nem adhato 3 even aluli gyermekeknek mert lenyelhetik vagy beszippanthatjak a kis reszeket. you will just have to excuse the lack of proper accents as i cant seem to make in this little box.

Caro Indeterminacy: yes, you're right. But then I would be barefoot and my feet would get dirty. And I don't like dirty feet. I guess I am a pija.

Cara SVM: Yes, we do have kinder eggs, and I buy them occasionally, but you know I feel guilty about contributing to more plastic crap in the universe. OK, now I am a scrooge. I should focus my recycling/waste neurosis on something other than sweet little kinder eggs, shouldn't I?

I will heed your Hungarian words of caution, and I promise not to give any kinder eggs to small children, thereby conceivably contributing to their choking death. Thanks for the tip.

Perhaps a better translation for 'pija' would be 'posh' or 'precious'. These both have +ve connotations, while the other -ve. And they are just as valid. You can then comfort yourselve with their other meanings.

ive been dreaming for some time of how one could creatively recycle those wee plastic pill boxes. regrettably, i have not saved all them all over the years but i am starting a collection right now! perhaps between the two of us, we can come up with an idea and see it to artistic fruition?

Oh, I like "posh!" Let's see,..am I posh? Well, yes, I suppose I am-- but I don't like posh bars/restaurants. Unless it's an Old World sort of posh. And I like street food. That's not posh. And I don't get manicures very often. But the rest-- yes, posh.

SVM: way to see a problem as an opportunity! I love that! Alright, I'll put it in the hopper and see if anything comes of it. But I think I should go buy at least a dozen kinder eggs for inspiration, don't you?
